On Tuesday morning we packed up the van and said good-bye to La Finca. We were all sad to leave, but excited for our next location, Casas de la Selva. The drive was long, but beautiful as we navigated windy mountain roads. We arrived at Casas de la Selva just in time for dinner followed by a slide show about the center. Casas de la Selva is part of an organization called Earth Watch. In the slide show we learned about the various projects Earth Watch has all over the world, while also learning specifically about the ongoing projects at Casas de la Selva. I’m sure we would all say the most memorable part of the presentation was learning about how the waste water was handled at the farm and about compost, including compost toilets, which produce something called humanure. Everyone was a bit grossed out at first, but as we learned more about the process, we realized how great it was for the environment.
The next morning we woke up to an amazing breakfast of French toast and fresh fruit, excellent fuel to keep us going during out morning of trail work. We split into two groups, one group started by cutting away ferns to clear away a new path to move an existing trail. The current trail was too close to the edge of a slope and its presence was causing erosion. Meanwhile, the second group was building stairs, filling in cinder blocks with mud to stabilize them and using pick axes to cut out new stairs. Once the second group finished clearing away the fern, they went to the plant nursery to do some weeding and general maintenance. After completing the stairs the second group, planted some bamboo on the side of the trail to help prevent erosion and threw the remaining bamboo javelin style into the forest. After a long morning we enjoyed our packed lunches and headed down the road to a local swimming hole where we relaxed for a few hours. In the evening the Casas de la Selva staff made us a fire, so we roasted marshmallows and enjoyed a fire poi show put on by one of the staff members.
The next morning we had to pack up the van and say good-bye to the Casas de la Selva staff. We were sad to leave, but everyone was excited to be heading to Aguadilla to go surfing! We drove along the southern coast, which was beautiful, much drier than everywhere else on the island.
On Friday we woke up bright and early to begin our surf lessons. Surfer Dan and Dana met us at the house to chat a bit about surfing and to lead us in some morning stretches, then we headed to Surfer’s beach to actually give the sport a try. We learned to look at the waves and “mind surf”, while we learned about the different parts of a wave. We learned how to paddle and how to pop up on our boards, went over a few safety things and then the first group hit the water. The wind started to pick up making it hard to stay in the area that we wanted to, but everyone was able to get on a few waves and we all learned how difficult surfing can be. The next day we opted for Jobos, a beach that is a bit more protected from the wind, which made for a much easier day. Almost everyone was able to stand up on a wave by the end of the day! In the evenings of our surf days we watched Harry Potter Part 1, in preparation for our Sunday outing to see Part 2.
On Sunday, we slept in and enjoyed an amazing brunch of pancakes, eggs and bacon! After a leisurely morning of food and some soccer, we headed to the movies theaters to see the final Harry Potter film. We all really enjoyed it, although we thought the epilogue should have just been left out.
After a restful Sunday, we picked up the pace again. On Monday we visited las Cuevas de Camuy, or the Camuy Caves, did laundry, and went to the beach. On Tuesday we drove to Rincon, to visit Aubre’s grandparents. They surprised us with dance lessons. A local band came and played for us and we all learned the difference dances from the different regions of Puerto Rico! We all had so much fun! We were sad to say good-bye at the end of the day, but we had to get back on the road to head back to La Finca.
This morning, we are helping out La Finca, planting pineapples and collecting leaves to mulch some gardens. This afternoon we will head to another farm where we will hang out until we head to Old San Juan for our final days together.
This week everyone pulled someone’s name out of a hat and they wrote something about that person. Enjoy!
